High Risk Obstetrics Q & A

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy might sound scary, but the goal of placing you in a high-risk group is to better monitor your pregnancy, to avoid any problems, and to act quickly should an issue arise.

High risk obstetrics is geared toward identifying and mitigating any risk that threatens the health of you or your baby. Typically, your risk is assessed based on:

  • Medical history
  • Behaviors: Such as poor diet, alcohol, drugs, or cigarette use
  • Preexisting conditions: Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and kidney disease, etc.
  • Age: Younger than 17 or older than 35 automatically puts you in the high-risk category
  • Multiple babies in the womb

In addition to these high-risk factors, your reproductive history will also play a role. For example, if you have a history of miscarriages or you’ve previously had difficult births, Dr. Siudmak will likely place you in high-risk obstetric care.

Another risk to watch out for is whether you have an infection, such as HIV or herpes, that can be passed to your baby during pregnancy and delivery.

Lastly, if Dr. Siudmak has detected a genetic condition or health problem with your fetus, you can expect to be considered a high-risk pregnancy.
